What is Meteora? MET Token and Solana DLMM Liquidity Review

Meteora is a liquidity infrastructure protocol built on Solana. The aim is to make capital more efficient for liquidity providers and token launches than a standard constant-product AMM allows. Much like other Solana DeFi tools, it sits underneath swaps routed through aggregators such as Jupiter, so traders can touch a Meteora pool without ever opening the app. The unique side is its Dynamic Liquidity Market Maker (DLMM), which replaces a flat price curve with discrete price bins and fees that move with volatility.

What is Meteora and the MET token?

Meteora grew out of Mercurial Finance before rebranding, and it has since become a core piece of Solana's liquidity layer. It offers DLMM pools with dynamic fees and bin steps, DAMM v2 pools, and Dynamic Vaults that help LPs and new token launches earn better yields while reducing the inefficiencies of standard AMMs. The $MET token powers governance, staking rewards, and a share of protocol fees across the ecosystem. Its maximum supply is 1 billion, with a large portion already circulating since the token generation event in October 2025.

How Meteora works: the DLMM

DLMM stands for Dynamic Liquidity Market Maker. Instead of spreading liquidity across every possible price, it lets you place capital where trading actually happens. @Made_Xtreme01 explained it well:

Think of it as putting your shop on a busy street instead of an empty one.

Price bins. DLMM organizes liquidity into discrete price bins, each representing a specific price range. As an LP you choose the bins your liquidity sits in. When trading occurs in those bins, your liquidity becomes active and earns fees.

Dynamic fees. Traditional DEXs charge fixed fees. DLMM adjusts the fee with market activity and volatility. That rewards LPs during busy periods and keeps liquidity available when demand is high.

Liquidity strategies. LPs pick a strategy that fits their goals. A wider price range gives more stability; a narrower range gives greater capital efficiency but needs more active management. There is no one-size-fits-all.

On-chain limit orders. DLMM also powers limit orders. You set a target price; when the market reaches it, the order can fill without a centralized exchange. Meteora pays the user 50% of the position's fees when a limit order fills.

As a result, DLMM concentrates liquidity around active prices, which improves capital efficiency and lowers slippage for traders while opening sharper fee capture for LPs.

The numbers for the first half of 2026

Meteora's own Token Holders' Report for the first half of 2026 (shared by @MeteoraInside) lays out where the protocol stands:

  • $32.1B in volume and $164.3M in fees for the half, both down as Solana activity cooled.
  • The take rate rose to 11.08%, up 148 basis points from 9.60% in the second half of 2025. While activity fell, Meteora's cut of that activity got stronger.
  • During May 2026 the protocol doubled its share of DLMM LP fees from 5% to 10%. Six weeks of data showed LPs did not leave: weekly unique depositors rose from 7.0K to 8.8K, and an LP who stayed earned more per dollar deposited after the change than before (gross fee yield on TVL went from 6.7% to 8.7%).
  • Tokens launched on pump.fun generated $50.2M of DLMM trading fees in the first half of 2026, about half of all DLMM LP fees. On those tokens DLMM's realized fee rate averaged 1.33% against PumpSwap's flat 0.25%.

The fee increase was not pure extraction. $500K was committed to growth alongside it, split between a team fund and a community fund run by the LP Army, and 10% of DLMM protocol fees now funds staking rewards with another 10% funding referral rewards.

The MET token and Referral Staking

MET's first real utility experiment is Referral Staking, and it is worth understanding because it is the mechanism that pays both stakers and people who refer others. When you stake MET, you earn a share of DLMM protocol fees — the same 10% fee share the protocol takes from LP activity funds the staking rewards. Referrers earn from a separate 10% slice of those fees, so inviting others to provide liquidity feeds the same pool of rewards. This is what the May 2026 fee-share increase (from 5% to 10%) was designed to pay for: more of each dollar of volume now flows back to MET holders and the people bringing liquidity to the protocol.

Adoption came quickly. The program opened in July 2026 and drew 55.5M MET staked in its first two days, reaching 70.0M MET (about 7% of total supply) across 2,442 wallets within weeks. An LP who stays deposited earns more per dollar after the change than before it, so the larger fee share has not pushed liquidity away.

The protocol also buys back MET with protocol revenue. The buyback wallet held 38.8M MET (3.9% of supply) as of mid-2026, and monthly token unlocks run on a fixed schedule of about 7.22M MET with no added emissions. Team tokens moved into Jupiter Lock on the same schedule, releasing continuously rather than in lump monthly transfers.

Risks to weigh

  • DLMM bins concentrate capital, so volatile tokens can move out of range fast. You earn nothing until price returns, and narrow ranges need active management.
  • Many top pools are memecoins. Token failure or a rug hits LPs directly, and dynamic fees price that risk rather than remove it.
  • MET carries ongoing unlocks (about 7.22M per month), a steady dilution headwind on the token.
  • As with any DeFi, smart-contract and aggregator-routing risk apply. Meteora publishes audits through its docs.

Looking to the future, Meteora is pushing LP positions to behave like the trading instruments Solana users already know, with limit orders, Quote Token Fees (where LPs choose which token they earn in), and tokenized-equity pools extending what on-chain liquidity can hold.
